The YW-531 is a very successful light armored personnel carrier first produced in the late 1960's for the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army. The YW-701 has an enlarged rear compartment to enable it to perform the Command and Ambulance roles. As a Command vehicle, the YW-701 can carry up to five radio sets and is armed with a single Type 54 12.7mm machine gun. It has been exported to Iraq and Sri Lanka, and was used in the recent Gulf conflicts. The Ambulance variant is similar, and is sometimes designated the YW-750. The interior is fitted out to carry stretchers and medical equipment.
