The Schwerer Wehrmacht Schlepper was designed as a low cost heavy artillery tractor and cargo carrier for use on the Eastern Front against the Soviet Union. Bussing-NAG produced the first pilot model in the Spring of 1943, with full production ordered soon after. The first versions had a soft cab, but later armored cab versions were produced. Bussing-NAG and Tatra produced 825 units before the end of the war, many of these were used for mounting weapons, such as the 15cm Panzerwerfer 42. This version had a fully armored body with the weapon mounted on the roof. The 15cm Panzerwerfer 42 was a 10-barrel rocket mortar, known by the allies as the "Moaning Minnie". It was devastating against troops caught out in the open and caused many casualties.
