The M1114 is a light truck designed to replace the jeep, it was designed in the 1980's and first produced in 1984. It is a relatively expensive vehicle and is much larger and heavier than previous trucks of this type, but it is powerful and has excellent off-road agility. When first used as a patrol vehicle in Somalia it was proved vulnerable to small arms fire and mines, resulting in crew casualties. Not surprising as most other armies use armored vehicles for this role. To help provide crew protection, an armor pack was designed for the crew compartment consisting of steel doors and panels as well as armored glass. This package became standard for US Hummers in Iraq prior to the 2003 invasion. This package is used on US Army, Marine and Air Force vehicles in Iraq and Afghanistan.
