Dragons are the most enduring of all fantasy creatures. Since antiquity, they have captivated the human imagination. While dragons are known from many cultures, with the exception of Far Eastern cultures, it is the European Middle Ages that produced the most extensive depictions of dragons and lindworms in the visual arts and various literary genres: In heroic epics, chivalric legends, and even hagiographies, these mythical creatures present a constant challenge to heroes in word and image. This book explores the function of medieval dragons and, with the help of over 100 illustrations, also depicts their appearance. A final chapter examines the survival of these monsters to the present day.
