This work is the first scholarly biography of Archduke Stephen (18171867). After a successful start to his career as Governor of Bohemia and Palatine of Hungary, he was forced into exile during the revolution of 1848 and retired to his mother's estates on the River Lahn, where he had a castle built in his own unique style. Based on the Archduke's correspondence, which is scattered across numerous archives, as well as contemporary accounts and newspaper reports, the biography traces the external and self-constructed image of a Habsburg who was regarded as significant by his contemporaries. His personality developed from self-images and external images, which in his case were more formative than his achievements.
