Our series shows Germanic people in battle with sword and frame. The frame was a thrusting lance with an iron tip, mostly used as a close combat weapon, rarely thrown. Although the Germanic tribes already knew how to work iron, the quantities of wrought iron produced were small, so it was used sparingly. Comparatively less iron was needed for the tip of a frame than for a sword, which was a precious weapon. The round shields were made of layers of wood and leather. Sometimes the rim and shield boss were made of metal. Helmets were quite rare. They were usually made of leather and crossed metal brackets against sword blows (spangenhelm). Armoured shirts were usually Roman loot. The wounded shown in our series were hit by Roman throwing spears. A "pilum" was a short and handy but heavy throwing spear that legionaries threw at the shortest distance at the same time before lunging at the enemy with their sword.
