Carl Spitzweg (February 5, 1808 September 23, 1885) was a German romanticist painter, especially of genre subjects. He is considered to be one of the most important artists of the Biedermeier era.

The Picnic or The Company of Actors:
Resting company of actors. Romantic scene from the Biedermeier period with a cheerful company at a rest.

The Angler: A happy, contented person, radiating tranquillity and ..... an angler indeed.

Spitzweg, The Alchemist (Alchimist). Also the chemist.
Whether natural scientist - butterfly catcher, the alchemist, the astronomer - or eccentrics like the cactus lover (Kakteen-Liebhaber), the eternal honeymooner, the Sunday hunter etc.. - Carl Spitzweg succeeded in his drawings and paintings in acting as chronicler and satirist in equal measure.

Butterfly Hunter :
Here Spitzweg's ironic vein is once again evident. Wearing strong glasses and carrying a too-small landing net, the amateur biologist stands rather helplessly in the middle of a tropical-looking forest, while two huge blue butterflies flutter about freely in the foreground. The viewer sees them, the more distant clumsy butterfly collector does not.

Sunday painter: Equipped with parasol, stool, easel, colour palette plus brushes and paints, the amateur painter knows no stopping...

The letter carrier: Packed with letters (love letters?) parcels and gazettes in his shoulder bag, the letter messenger wanders the Biedermeier alleys...

"Where is the passport?": Spitzweg made fun of many customs of his time. This is the case in this scene, in which a gendarme asks travelling musicians for their passports. As the policeman speaks Franconian dialect, one of the musicians understands "bass" and points to the musical instrument...
