The second-hand bookseller / The amateurgardener / The cactus lover / The would-be sportsman
Engraving by Franz Karl Mohr.
Carl Spitzweg (February 5, 1808 September 23, 1885) was a German romanticist painter, especially of genre subjects. He is considered to be one of the most important artists of the Biedermeier era.
The Sunday Hunter: The "Sunday Hunter" waiting for a roast hare sits at the edge of a field with poppies in bloom. Since he has bridged his boredom with red wine, he misses the Sunday "roast".
The Antiquarian, also The Antiquarian Bookseller (c. 1880): Immersed in reading his books, the bookseller forgets God and the world...
The Gardener: For this eccentric, the garden and its plants are the most important thing on earth. He cares for and cherishes his favourites and is the happiest person in the world...
"The cactus lover" or "Der Kaktusfreund": According to Spitzweg: The Reverend as a Cactus Lover.
Even though Spitzweg was critical of the people around him, he never pilloried them. Just as he liked to point out eccentrics, he spiced all his pictures with a good dash of humour.
