Carl Spitzweg (February 5, 1808 September 23, 1885) was a German romanticist painter, especially of genre subjects. He is considered to be one of the most important artists of the Biedermeier era.

Monk and Rose: (Whom is the monk looking at? The blossoming rose or the dimly discernible female being in the garden...? Spitzweg leaves this interpretation open).
"The Widower": With this picture Spitzweg shows that even in the so-called "year of mourning" things are very human. The grieving widower discreetly looks around for a new companion and the two ladies do not fail to notice....
