Knights, knights and landsknechts felt themselves to be lords and warriors and considered entrenchment work to be beneath their dignity. For the construction of field fortifications or siege redoubts (parallels, sappers, gun emplacements) the peasant population of the surrounding area was called upon.
Our series shows redoubt builders with shovels, axes and buckets (for the earth) in various positions.
Also to be used as builders (Bauleute, Handwerker) in the Middle Ages.

A sconce is a small protective fortification, such as an earthwork, often placed on a mound as a defensive work for artillery.[1] It was used primarily in Northern Europe from the late Middle Ages until the 19th century.
