Europa, Anfang 16. Jh.
With the help of the fuse or ignition rod the piece is fired. With a smouldering fuse, the piecemaster ignites the "priming herb" which he had poured into the fuse hole after loading. The priming powder burned through the fuse hole to the coarser powder in the barrel. When loosening the piece, the piecemaster had to stand to the side, because the gun "ran back" and also a jet of flame often rose from the firing hole. Iron solid bullets were fired, sometimes also the dreaded chain or rod bullets, which could mow down whole rows while spinning around themselves.
Incl. gun.
