The Indians first learned to revere the mustangs as sacred animals, which they treated with reverence and respect, through their encounters with the conquistadors. But the mustangs served the Indians primarily as a source of meat, if they could somehow steal the animals from the settlers. It was not until the 17th century that the Indians themselves learned to handle the animals and used them for hunting, warfare, breeding and as a means of transport.
