On 26 November 1812 a bridge was made across the Berezina for cavalry and infantry. Napoleon himself crossed the river with the Guard at noon on the 27th. Arriving at the western bridgehead, he got back on his horse and rode on. With him the remnants of his army also crossed. With this series a scene of the crossing can be depicted. Napoleon on the western bank in safety. With on the further retreat his Old Guard, as well as infantrymen, hussars, cuirassiers, dragoons, etc. are just crossing the last stretch of the bridge. Some dragoons and Uhlans have fallen from the bridge and are also saving themselves through the raging river.
