Hussars

Traditionally close relations were maintained with Prussia, on whose side, for example, 16,000 Hanoverians - Lüneburgers - Braunschweigers fought during the Seven Years' War, partly financed by English subsidy payments.
Count Luckner, head of the eponymous Elector Hanoverian hussars, entered Prussian service on 1 May 1757. From then on, the hussars were tirelessly engaged in many missions during the Seven Years.
When the Seven Years' War broke out, he entered Hanoverian service as a major in 1757. Luckner began as commander of a hussar corps of 54 men. He distinguished himself against the French at Krefeld, Marburg, Eisenach, Göttingen, Hameln, Kassel and Northeim and led a kind of partisan warfare with his hussars in the enemy's rear. He was successful in destroying supply columns and in night raids. In August 1759, he captured the French Marshal's portfolio containing secret instructions from the War Ministry. In the same year he was promoted to colonel.
In 1761 Luckner, who had meanwhile risen to lieutenant-general, had a regiment at his disposal and possessed a legendary reputation. When his regiment was disbanded at the end of the war, he threw his general's coat, hung with all the medals, into the fireplace in front of the assembled officer corps and asked to be dismissed.
