The Seven Years' War hit Electoral Hanover hard as one of the main battlefields. Austria's alliance with its old enemy France had reversed the political relations and led Hanover in the wake of Great Britain to ally with Frederick II of Prussia. In the early years, the Prussian-British forces were mostly in bad shape. The great military skill of Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, whom the Prussian king willingly left to his ally as commander-in-chief of the allied army, could not fully compensate for the losses of the first two years, especially the defeat of the Duke of Cumberland at Hastenbeck (1757) and the subsequent Convention of Kloster Zeven, which left the whole country in the hands of the French for a year. - Wikipedia -
