The wet wiping was necessary to extinguish combustion residues or to wipe them out of the barrel and to cool the hot barrel. Overheated pipes could burst with the entire charge when fired. Smouldering particles or the overheated pipe itself could ignite the next charge of powder. Careful wiping was therefore a prerequisite for a safe next charge.
