The accuracy of the shots depended on the experience of the piecemaster, who had to take various factors into account: e.g. the bullet weight, which varied like the calibre of the guns, the quantity and explosive power of the powder, which depended on the mixture of ingredients and on the graininess, the terrain and the estimated target distance. Then he had to determine the lateral direction and the elevation of the barrel. The lateral direction was given by rotating the entire gun, the elevation of the barrel was given by wooden alignment wedges hammered under the barrel.
