Who would have thought that we would have to destroy these beautiful areas with war! wrote Lieutenant General Konrad Krafft von Dellmensingen in his diary at the end of May 1915. The leader of the Alpine Corps was expressing what many Germans who rushed to the aid of their Austrian allies in South Tyrol in 1915 were surely thinking. It has now been more than 100 years since the Alpine Corps saw action on the Dolomite front. Memories of those German soldiers who fought and died in the mountains are fading fast. This book is dedicated to these men and attempts to reconstruct the period between May and October 1915 in reports and biographies. 500 mostly unpublished photographs complement the text and not only illustrate the cultural landscapes of South Tyrol in 1915, but also paint a vivid picture of the soldiers' everyday lives.
