In the naval battle of Lepanto. The naval battle of Lepanto took place on 7 October 1571 in the Ionian Sea off the entrance to the Gulf of Patras in present-day Greece. The Christian Mediterranean forces, organised under Pope Pius V and led by Spain, won a surprising victory over the Ottoman Empire. The commander-in-chief on the side of the Holy League of 1571 was Don Juan de Austria, on the Ottoman side Kaptan Derya Ali Pasha, who fell in the battle. It is the naval battle with the most casualties in one day. Admiral Agostino Barbarigo, who had opened the visor of his helmet to better hear himself, was hit in the right eye by a Turkish arrow at 11 o'clock and was mortally wounded.
