The book covers hundreds of American military buttons from the end of the Revolution to 1835: regular army, naval, state militias, diplomatic service. The authors drew on unpublished research notes, publications from 1911 to the present, and new information contributed by collectors and diggers. This book offers a new understanding of American patriotic heraldry and the development of manufacturing processes and regional variations. It examines federal regulations, button types and the use of various symbols in relation to each state and its militia. Nearly 2,000 photographs of these buttons, most of them showing both the front and back, are reproduced in colour to aid identification and attribution. This useful guide provides a context in which to appreciate American military buttons of the early 19th century, as they reflect the growth and maturation of the American nation.
