Hermann Wilhelm Göring (* 12 January 1893 - Ä 15 October 1946) was a leading German National Socialist politician. From May 1935, he was commander-in-chief of the German air force. Göring was instrumental in the Gleichschaltung and the persecution of the opposition. He was responsible for the establishment of the Gestapo and the first concentration camps from 1933. From October 1936 onwards, he was responsible for the further rearmament of the Wehrmacht, thus preparing for war. In July, Hitler appointed Göring Reichsmarschall. He was found guilty on all four charges on 1 October 1946 and sentenced to death by hanging. He evaded execution of the sentence by committing suicide.
