On 8 February 1945, over 50,000 British and Canadian soldiers advanced to attack the German defensive positions in the vast Reichswald forest in what would prove to be one of the last and bloodiest battles of the entire Second World War in Europe. The Reichswald on the Rhenish border between the Netherlands and Germany became the scene of an epic battle that ultimately involved over 200,000 British and Canadian soldiers. The campaign, which took place between better-known battles such as the Battle of the Bulge in 1944 and the crossing of the Rhine in 1945, was brutal. The Allies suffered nearly 16,000 casualties, the Germans an estimated 44,000. Drawing on a wealth of sources from British, Canadian and European museums and archives, the authors provide - on the 80th anniversary - a new and timely account of this epic battle of the British and Canadians against the Wehrmacht, fought on the north-eastern borders of Germany in the final days of the war in Europe.
