SOLUTION BOX 30: How to paint Early WWII US Navy Aircraft

This solution box allows you to apply the most common colors and effects to U.S. Navy aircraft from early World War II.
In the Pacific during World War II, carrier-based aircraft, both Japanese and American, played the most significant role. From Pearl Harbor until the end of the war, fighting between U.S. and Japanese naval aircraft was relentless. At the end of December 1940, the U.S. Navy ordered all carrier-based aircraft to be painted entirely in light gray. In August 1941, it was subsequently decided that the upper surfaces of the aircraft in the Pacific Fleet's Battle Force would be painted blue-gray, while the undersides would retain the previous light gray. In the following months, more aircraft were gradually required to be painted in this color scheme. In February 1942, it was officially ordered that all U.S. Navy aircraft, both carrier-based and land-based, be painted in blue-gray and light gray. This original camouflage scheme remained in use until January 1943, when a new three-color camouflage scheme for carrier-based aircraft was introduced. This consisted of Sea Blue for the upper surface, Intermediate Blue for the center section, and Insignia White for the underside.
