The novel for the ZDF two-part series about the sinking of the "Wilhelm Gustloff". 30 January 1945: The large passenger ship "Wilhelm Gustloff" lies in the Bay of Gdansk. It is to carry thousands of refugees and wounded soldiers to safety from the advancing Red Army. The young navy helper Erika Galetschky meets her lover Helmut Kehding in Gotenhafen, who is to take command of the "Wilhelm Gustloff". At the last minute, Erika manages to get on board the ship. The completely overloaded ship leaves the harbour without sufficient escort. While the commanders are still arguing about competencies, a Russian torpedo hits the ship. Of the approximately 10,000 passengers, only a few survive the dramatic sinking.
