Early in the American Civil War, the Union began to build a blockade against the Confederacy. It tells the story of one part of this blockading fleet, the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, which patrolled the area between southern North Carolina and northern Florida. It shows how the blockade was established in the southern Atlantic, what operations were carried out by the Union ships along the South Carolina coast, and how, in the course of the war, the blockade was finally made increasingly solid and impervious to Confederate blockade runners.
