On 1 June 1939, the British submarine "Thetis" sank during its diving trials in Liverpool Bay. Her loss remains to this day the worst peacetime submarine disaster ever experienced by the Royal Navy: 99 men drowned or suffocated in the last 50 hours of their lives. The disaster became an international media event, largely because the trapped souls on board were so close to being rescued after they managed to get the stern of the submarine to stick out of the water some 18 feet.
The book paints an accurate picture of events before, during and after the tragic sinking. In doing so, the author takes a fresh look at the question of guilt and examines some of the alleged conspiracy theories that have surrounded the sinking of the "Thetis".
