Description
In the 19th century, "the Orient" stood for fairytale promise - today for terror, despotism and disintegrating states. Has only our image of the "Orient" changed since then, or the Orient itself? Kersten Knipp cuts a swathe through the complex subject matter, provides unknown historical background and, brilliantly formulated, traces the fields of conflict in which the Arab world and modernity meet irreconcilably.
When Napoleon landed in Egypt in 1798 with an army of soldiers, scientists and engineers, the Middle East came into intensive contact with European modernity for the first time. Since then, the region has been torn: On the one hand, it is fascinated by Western achievements and tries to catch up with them; on the other hand, it invokes its own traditions, which it tries to link with modernity. It suffers from the unfortunate legacy of European colonialism, but also from self-inflicted stagnation and incompetent regimes.
