In 1348, King Edward III founded the oldest order of knights in Great Britain, the Order of the Garter. Since this order was as high-minded as it was masculine, he also founded a charitable organization for impoverished soldiers, who became known as the Knights of the Alms. In 1833, their name was changed to Military Knights of Windsor by William IV. Over the centuries, there have been about 650 such knights (far fewer than the Knights of the Order of the Garter). Their backgrounds and careers varied greatly. Most had a military background (three of them wore the Victoria Cross), but there were also astrologers, crusaders, mad barons, politicians, artists, and impostors. Men-At-Alms tells their stories against the backdrop of the history of their time.
