The literature available in Western languages on samurai and their armies during their heyday in the 16th and early 17th centuries has so far lacked a detailed analysis of the armies as such - how were they composed, what hierarchies were there, what role did the warriors of different armouries play and what were the actual differences to European warfare? How did these armies of up to and sometimes over 100,000 men function, what tactics did they use and finally - of interest to figure collectors - where did each individual samurai stand in the order of battle? This two-volume work is largely based on the analysis of Japanese sources and Japanese-language secondary literature.
