The author examines the social and ethnic origins of officers, their reasons for joining the army, their upbringing and training, their ideology, lifestyle and particular habits, their role in politics, culture and society, the development of the officer corps between 1848 and 1918, the officers' relationship with the civil authorities, their responsibility for the continuation and eventual collapse of the monarchy and, finally, their influence on the history of eastern Central Europe after 1918.
