Napoleon Bonaparte and Juliette Récamier were both very influential and well-known in France, but they were often at odds. Their story took place on the European stage at a time of political upheaval and new political ideas. After the French Revolution, Napoleon came to power and experienced everything from spectacular victories to miserable defeats. His defeat in the early 19th century would lead to Europe gaining new national borders and Britain, Russia and the United States gaining greater international influence. Juliette, on the other hand, exercised her own power. Due to the turbulent French Revolution, noble and aristocratic landowners were replaced by a new wealthy class in the private sector. Juliette and her husband were among the beneficiaries of this growing wealth and influence, and she owed her power to her newfound position in society.
Juliette also saw life differently to Napoleon. She saw life from the perspective of a wealthy socialite, whereas Napoleon's desires were always overshadowed by his military experiences and his meteoric rise to power.
Along the way, Juliette had to confront the petulant emperor and realise that his own brother would fall in love with her. Even some of Napoleon's greatest enemies would woo her.
