This examination of enemy images between Northern and Southern states offers an entirely new look at the genesis of the American Civil War. As free states and slave states fought over dominance in the American Union in the mid-19th century, intersectional enemy images further inflamed the situation. In the South, presumed characteristics of the "Yankees", such as material greed and a tendency towards hypocrisy and fanaticism, were perceived as a threat to their own security. Northerners, in turn, agitated against slaveholders, whom they considered brutal, lazy and deeply un-American aristocrats. These enemy images undermined mutual trust and led the country into a bloody civil war.
