Very comprehensive description of the American Civil War with special attention to the role of German immigrants in the conflict between the northern and southern states. The main part of the work is a description of the causes of the war, the historical development of the slavery question, secession and the importance of immigration for the ultimate victory of the Union, embedded in an account of the entire course of the war. Furthermore, there is a biographical section of over one hundred pages, which introduces important German-born personalities - mostly officers - by means of short contributions.
