The campaign of 1805 and the Battle of Austerlitz in December of the same year are regarded as Napoleon I's strategic and tactical masterpieces. This work, on the other hand, attempts to show that the grandiose victories of the 1805 campaign were in reality the beginning of the French emperor's end. They led to a gross overestimation of Napoleon I's own abilities and those of his soldiers, and ultimately to the catastrophe in Russia in 1812.
