In this book, the author describes the history of the Nez Perce up to the death of Old Joseph in 1871. It is the story of a peaceful people of 2000 to 3000 people who approached the white invaders with great friendliness and tried to adapt to them, but who nevertheless had to learn tragically that treaty rights did not count when it came to gold and fertile land.
