This publication on the American Civil War focuses on President Abraham Lincoln's appointment policy for his generals. A number of generals in the Union Army held their high military posts not because of their performance on the battlefield, but because they themselves or their families had great political influence. What Lincoln intended in appointing these individuals and what advantages and disadvantages this brought him and the Union is examined in this study.
