US President Abraham Lincoln raised a total of 133 officers to the rank of Major General between 1861 and 1865. Their photographs along with biographical sketches are presented in this volume. These top officers of the Union Army came from a wide variety of civilian and military backgrounds. What they all had in common was their inexperience in commanding large contingents of troops. Only in the course of the war did these men learn, in sometimes extremely bloody lessons, how to lead units of divisional, corps or army strength on the battlefield. Some of the men portrayed here went on to remarkable military and/or political careers after the end of the war, while others disappeared into the mists of history. Presented here are a variety of rare bw portrait cards as well as other visual material.
