The Historical Museum of the Palatinate is dedicating a major art and cultural history special exhibition to Richard I the Lionheart from 17 September 2017. For the first time, the person and environment of the English king will be the focus of a major presentation. Valuable manuscripts, weapons, sculptures and archaeological finds from the most important places of his reign are presented in the accompanying catalogue, as are high-ranking works of art from the Plantagenêt, Capetian, Hohenstaufen and Guelph dynasties.
In the second half of the 12th century, the English king ruled over a gigantic empire that encompassed England and large parts of France and stretched from the border of Scotland to the Pyrenees. On his way back from the Third Crusade, he falls into the captivity of the Hohenstaufen Emperor Henry VI and only regains his freedom after more than a year by paying an immense ransom.
