Cultural history of the First World War. The historian Ernst Piper has dealt intensively with the cultural-historical aspects of the First World War and unfolds a great intellectual panorama of this time. Piper describes the intellectual mobilisation of the nations, the development of total war, the division of the labour movement, the plight of the Jewish minorities and the disastrous effects of the war in Germany after the defeat of 1918. He vividly shows how the events of the war were reflected in debates, literature and visual media. He presents the political, intellectual and artistic protagonists as seismographs of the profound changes that shook the world. The result is a new, vivid narrative of the First World War that stands out from the flood of relevant literature.
