In the European revolutionary year 1848/1849, the lagoon city of Venice also revolted against its Habsburg overlord, making itself virtually an independent republic. Austro-Hungarian troops under Field Marshal Radetzky were sent to bring the rebellious city republic to its senses. For a total of 17 months, the quickly assembled Venetian volunteer army withstood the siege by the Imperial and Royal Army.
Based on contemporary accounts, diary entries and eyewitness testimony, this work provides an almost day-by-day account of the military events surrounding the siege of Venice in 1848-1849. As such, this is also a good look at the siege techniques and tactics of defenders and attackers in the mid-19th century.
