The book shows and tells the story of the most daring part of Operation Market Garden: the landing of the British 1st Airborne Division west of Arnhem to capture the bridges over the Rhine. The operation did not go according to plan, and the British were soon forced to go on the defensive. After the area around the road bridge at Arnhem had fallen completely into German hands, a six-day siege of the remaining airborne troops in a small area in Oosterbeek ensued.
