When people in Germany are asked about European countries that kept slaves and profited from the slave trade, Sweden is almost never mentioned. This book aims to fill that gap. For the first time ever, both aspects are addressed in a single publication: Sweden's role in the global slave trade and the fact that Swedish subjects served as slaves in various regions of the world. Sweden had colonies in North America, on the West African coast and in the Caribbean. It was only a few thousand slaves who were transported on Swedish ships, and even fewer Swedes who were enslaved in Morocco, the Ottoman Empire, Dzungaria or Russia. But slavery, on whatever scale, was a crime committed by humans against humans, which is so at odds with our modern image of liberal Sweden.
