Description
The first half of the 20th century, which began so bloody with the First World War, marked the end of 500 years of European power politics. Never before had such masses of people been mustered. Never before had a war affected the entire economy and civilian life. Apart from newspapers, the poster was the only mass medium in every country to control these events. Many posters were not merely information carriers, but primarily propaganda instruments. But even if they were mainly bound by the laws of advertising psychology, they were often also works of art.
This triple content of being information carriers, propaganda material and works of art at the same time is what makes the posters of the First World War so interesting, despite their gruesome occasion. The comparison of French and Austro-Hungarian pieces is particularly appealing. The artists of both countries used different poster language even for quite similar subjects, but to achieve the same goals. Their works were perhaps not as psychologically sophisticated as the posters of Great Britain or the USA, but in any case they are among the most artistically valuable.
