Although Ralph Bagnold is widely known as the founder of the "Long Range Desert Group" (1940) and the author of *The Physics of Blown Sands and Desert Dunes* (1941), little has been published about his early life. These memoirs were written in 1919 but never published. Following the outbreak of war in 1914, Bagnold joined the Royal Engineers, completed his training at Woolwich and Chatham, and arrived in France as a young officer in July 1915. Bagnolds unitthe 83rd Field Company, attached to the 20th Divisionwas stationed near Laventie, France, from October 1915 to January 1916; it is here that he begins recounting his experiences at the front. As a sapper officer, he was typically quartered a few miles behind the front line, moving forward each night to work in the trenches and No Mans Land. In February 1916, Bagnold and his men relocated to Ypres, but in July 1916, they marched south to the Somme. The four chapters describing his experiences on the Somme form the heart of the memoirs. While Bagnold was initially impressed by the sheer scale of the undertaking and hopeful for success, his perspective shifted; as the massive offensive dragged on, he increasingly grasped the impossibility of a decisive victory. Many of Bagnolds observations are vivid and compelling, often drawing connections to broader themes. What did the first tanks look like, and how effective were they? What does it feel like to put on a gas mask or inhale poison gas? What did frontline soldiers think of the General Staff? What was daily life like for the sappers? The narrative brings us closer to all of this. *A Sapper Officers War* concludes amidst the fierce fighting at Passchendaele. The abrupt nature of this ending likely reflects the unique and definitive experience of many soldiers.
