1917 was a desperately hard year for the Allies. The forces of France, Russia and Italy were at a low ebb, while the Central Powers seemed to have regained their strength. By the middle of the year, only the British Army was still capable of major offensive operations on the Western Front. It was forced to bear the brunt of the war and found itself fighting hard battles against an experienced and determined German enemy. Thus the year was marked not only by the muddied Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele), but also by the major offensives at Arras, Messines Ridge and Cambrai.
