Venice at the beginning of the 16th century. In the alleys of the lagoon city they meet for the first time Laura, who is fleeing from the persecutions of her enemies, and Antonio, who keeps his head above water by stealing. From the beginning, they are attracted to each other despite all their differences. And both are filled with the longing to leave hardship and poverty behind. In the years that follow, Laura and Antonio's paths cross again and again, and their encounters are marked by deadly intrigues and consuming passion. In the lagoon city, overflowing with sensual pleasure, they meet masked men and assassins, jugglers and geniuses. Walking between light and shadow, they embark on adventurous forays and brave fatal dangers. Their lives are marked by triumphs as well as bitter defeats, but at the end of this eventful game they both have only one goal - victory over their past.
