At the end of the 6th century, the West Frankish queen Brunichild seeks revenge after her husband has fallen victim to an attack by his brother Chilperich. And her young son is also in danger, for now he stands in the way of Chilperich's quest for power. Her most dangerous enemy, however, is her sister-in-law Fredegund, who plots countless intrigues. Brunichild is loyally supported by her long-time confidant Wittiges, who has come to power, honour and wealth in the Frankish kingdom. But then the queen falls in love with the eldest son of her arch-enemy. Will the disappointed Wittiges risk everything he has achieved so far for his former love?
