London 1529: After the death of his father, fourteen-year-old Nick of Waringham inherits a run-down barony - and the unforgiving resentment of King Henry VIII. The latter wants to break away from the Catholic Church in order to divorce the queen. Soon the papists, including Henry's daughter Mary, are no longer sure of their lives. But in the turmoil of the Reformation, the English pin their hopes on Mary, and Nick devises a daring plan to protect the princess from her greatest enemy: her own father.
