The signs are mounting, but no one is really expecting it: The Great Indian Insurrection, also called the Sepoy War, breaks out in 1857. Harry Flashman is a political agent, a role that actually suits him well because it seems harmless and there are no results to show for it. But as usual he miscalculates and he gets caught in the focal points of the uprising. He meets and falls in love with the beautiful Rani Lakschmibai, he is present at the Kanpur massacre and meets his friend Ilderim, the Pashtun. Exciting, varied and full of historical details, politically incorrect as usual and with a lot of humour.
