Historical novel about wine, love, Napoleonic rule, all kinds of crooks and the changing times. The novel is set in 1800 against the background of the so-called "French period" in the Palatinate. The invention of a wine pump threatens to deprive the guild of wine-scoopers, who are responsible for transporting the wine barrels, of their wages and bread. The great subject of wine is echoed here in historical garb. The story is both a portrait of the mores of the early 19th century and a suspenseful thriller, and not least a tribute to wine and the people who spend their lives making it palatable to us.
